OBSERVANCE AND NON-OBSERVANCE OF THE SEQUENCE-OF-TENSES RULE IN REPORTED SPEECH IN THE PYRENEAN VARIANT OF PORTUGUESE

Abstract

The Portuguese language observes the sequence-of-tenses rule but allows not observing it in reported speech under certain conditions. The author examines the functioning of this phenomenon by modern linguistic material trying to go beyond the limits of a purely theoretical approach offered in previous studies. The researcher analyses both grammatical and lexical means to express the Future Tense (in reported speech they undergo transformations) and concludes that non-observation of the sequence- of-tenses rule serves to emphasize the temporal meaning of a verb in reported speech, it’s a marker, which indicates that futural temporal relation is preserved.
