REMINISCENCES OF “WISE VIRGINS OF ANTIQUITY” IN THE CREATIVE HERITAGE OF “WISE HÉLOÏSE” (XII CENTURY)

Abstract

The article is devoted to studying the key meaningful dominants associated with the authoress’s personality and ancient female images in the creative heritage of Héloïse, Peter Abelard’s beloved. The researcher discovers what particular images she used, analyzes their interpretation by ancient authors, reveals meaningful differences in Héloïse’s and her predecessors’ interpretations, which allows identifying personal components. The image of an ancient “wise virgin” most vividly represented in Ovid’s poem “Heroides” dominates. The heroines’ experience provides Héloïse wide opportunities to construct new identities both for herself and for Abelard combining Christian (monastic) and pagan (philosophical) mentality.
