Role of Realia in Song Discourse (by the Material of the English-Language Rock Musicians)

Abstract

The aim of the study is to determine the role that realia play in song discourse. The article analyses the role of realia in song discourse, identifies their functions through the lens of song discourse and text expressiveness, brings to light the ways of making emotional impact on a listener by the use of realia, provides an insight into the role of realia in transferring information via song lyrics. Scientific novelty of the research lies in examining the role of realia in discourse using specific case studies of the English-language musical performers. It has been found that realia play an important role in song discourse and that without their understanding it is impossible to convey the author’s intention to the full extent and make emotional impact on a listener, which, in its turn, is the main purpose of song discourse.
