Musical Codes in M. Petrosyan’s Novel “The Gray House”

Abstract

The article aims to trace functioning of musical codes in M. Petrosyan’s novel “The Gray House”. Musical codes in M. Petrosyan’s novel have not been studied before, which accounts for scientific novelty of the article. An intermedial analysis allows the researcher to explain sociocultural genesis of the novel’s artistic world. Special attention is paid to instances of perceiving songs in foreign languages and to the process of acculturation. As a result, a way of introducing intermedial codes into the novel is described, providing insight into the author’s mindset of “codifying” musical references and quotes. It is found how foreign musical culture is adopted by the novel’s characters and how it begins to determine their consciousness. By analysing references to musical compositions and show business events, the researcher managed to determine timeframe for the events taking place in the novel.
