Borrowings in the Modern Spanish Language through the Prism of Linguistic Purism

Abstract

The research objectives are as follows: to reveal attitude of the Spanish language bearers to foreign borrowings, to identify the basic groups of lexical units perceived as “contaminations”. The author presents results of a research conducted in a language school in Spain where she taught Russian as a foreign language. The students’ survey covered the following issues: personal attitude to the problem of borrowing, the level of psychological comfort when dealing with foreign words, understanding sources and motives of borrowing. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the researcher describes native speakers’ attitude to foreign borrowings (recognition of personal responsibility for purity of the language, awareness of the tendency for Anglicization of speech) and compiles a list of the borrowings perceived as “contaminations” in native speakers’ consciousness. The research findings are as follows: analysing the students’ survey results, the author identifies semantic affiliation of borrowings, their level of assimilation, importance from the viewpoint of the language enrichment (existence of the Spanish equivalent). The students’ attitude on the issue of native speakers’ personal responsibility for purity of the language is revealed, individual peculiarities of perceiving borrowed words are considered.
