Importance of the “Human Factor” in Joseph Conrad’s Works

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to determine the features characterising J. Conrad’s depiction of characters, their uniqueness, the complexity of their images. The paper emphasises the fact that his characters are different from those of previous eras, the author developed his own ideas on the depiction of characters and plot construction. Scientific originality of the paper lies in identifying the features of J. Conrad’s style in the depiction of characters in his early works and determining the author’s individual creative manner. As a result, it has been proved that J. Conrad does address complex matters of human life in his novels, his characters are lonely and at the same time have a “doppelganger”, the search for the characters’ inner side, i.e. their feelings, emotions, experiences, is clearly traced in the author’s works, while the characters’ outer side, i.e. their personality, is also emphasised.
