Speech Portrait of the Female Character from Hayao Miyazaki’s Anime Film “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind”

Abstract

The paper addresses the issue of studying the speech portrait of a character in a fictional work. The fact that age, gender, psychological, social, ethnocultural and linguistic aspects of personality are reflected in the speech portrait is indubitable. The purpose of the research is to identify the features peculiar to the speech portrait of Nausicaä, the female protagonist from Hayao Miyazaki’s anime film “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind”. The research is novel in that it is the first to consider the language of an anime character from the perspective of identifying their linguocultural characteristics. As a result of the research, it can be argued that Nausicaä’s speech portrait makes it possible to characterise the protagonist as a leader who is not devoid of a sense of compassion and empathy. She is highly emotional, which is confirmed by the numerous examples where ending particles, exclamative sentences, interjections and expressive vocabulary are used.
