The image-symbol “cat – predator” in English-language literature

Abstract

The aim of the research is to identify the linguo-stylistic means of forming the animalistic image-symbol “cat – predator” in English-language prose and poetry. The article examines one of the most complex categories of art – the artistic image in its animalistic manifestation. The focus is on the cat family, whose representatives appear in the analyzed literary works, demonstrating their predatory nature. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the application of an original classification (based on the nature of the relationship between cats and other animals, people, and the supernatural) when considering a corpus of examples containing references to the image-symbol “cat – predator” in English-language works, both prose and poetic, some of which have never been studied before. As a result of the research, it was established that any animal in culture represents a more or less holistic symbol, embodying a certain character trait. “Cat – predator” is the most ancient image-symbol, which reflects the stubbornness of cats, their eternal love of freedom, and their desire to challenge the rules. To create this image, authors most often use epithets with a negative connotation, verbs of motion, alliteration, hyperbole, parallelism, as well as words from the semantic field “war”. With the help of these linguo-stylistic means, a vivid animalistic image of a hunter is drawn, merciless to his victims, wayward and independent.
