Speech etiquette in the discourse of diplomatic communication (based on the British Foreign Secretary’s speech)

Abstract

The aim of the study is to reveal the features of diplomatic discourse etiquette from the point of view of the stylistic originality of the texts of the diplomacy language. The article considers one of the genres of diplomatic communication, i.e., the text of the speech by the British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, published on the website of the Foreign Office of the United Kingdom, using which the main patterns and etiquette principles of diplomatic discourse are traced. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the comprehensive discursive and pragmatic approach to the analysis of the content of the concept of “diplomatic etiquette”, which covers the norms and protocol of international communication, the principles of international law and speech communication in general. As a result of the study, it was proved that diplomatic discourse is a type of political international communication, resorting to various discursive strategies necessary for the purpose of achieving consensus between states. Among such strategies are positive representation, cooperation and compromise, as well as intentional distortion and reformatting of meanings, rudeness, euphemization and dysphemization of speech, etc. Thus, the concept of diplomatic etiquette in the era of modern international communication includes, in addition to the traditional principles of polite behavior, elements of intentional violation of the maxims of politeness.
