Anthroponyms as an element of the architectonics of E. Rutherfurd’s saga novel “London”

Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify the role of anthroponyms in shaping the architectonics of E. Rutherfurd’s saga novel “London”. The scientific novelty of the work is ensured by a comprehensive approach to the problem of the functions of literary anthroponymy, revealing the participation of anthroponyms in creating the architectonics of the paratext and the main text of the saga novel. The results obtained demonstrate that the architectonics of the novel is built on a solid foundation of family-related onyms, reflecting the passage of time from 54 BC up to 1997 in its objective and subjective manifestations. The anthroponyms are characterized by species diversity and a broad spectrum of ethno-linguistic affiliation. Precedent names of rulers function as markers of the cultural and historical periods of the characters’ lives. A key role in the cultural-semantic and structural organization of the saga novel is assigned to micro-precedent naming of representatives of several London families. The etymologies of the anthroponyms of the central characters are identified, the reasons for the transformation of anthroponyms by their bearers are typologized (social, confessional, and stochastic); the etiology of the change of anthroponyms is explored. It is proven that anthroponyms play the role of load-bearing structures in the architectonics of E. Rutherfurd’s saga novel “London”.
