Metrification in Sherwood Anderson's prose

Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify the interaction between prose and verse principles in Sherwood Anderson's prose, determining the degree of its metricality. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that this article presents, for the first time in domestic and international literary studies, data on the metrical profile of Sherwood Anderson's works belonging to various stages of his career, and identifies the leading types of syllabo-tonic meter found in the writer's texts. The results obtained showed a high degree of metricality in Sherwood Anderson's prose – both in early texts written as articles for the "Agricultural Advertising" newspaper column (1904), intended for advertising agricultural goods, and in later works, in particular the novel "Dark Laughter" (1925). The quantitative ratio of sentences in which the presence of fragments of syllabo-tonic meter was traced is approximately from 40 to 65% in three different texts; predominantly, these were disyllabic meters – iamb and trochee. The data obtained clearly demonstrate the role of elements of verse metrics in Sherwood Anderson's prose and allow us to consider this phenomenon as an element of modernist prose and a manifestation of the writer's "artistic bilingualism".
