Peculiarities of Ivan Bunin's translated story "Stars"

Abstract

This article is dedicated to the study of the artistic originality of the translation of Ivan Bunin's story "Stars" (1930), which was based on a fragment of the memoirs of the French writer Frédéric Mistral. The aim of the study is the identification of the artistic and semantic features of Bunin's translation. For us, it is important to establish its connections with Russian folklore, the writer's philosophical lyrics, and the nostalgic sentiments of the émigré period. The scientific novelty of the research consists in the fact that we are identifying, for the first time, Bunin's creative approach to translation, which transforms into an independent artistic statement. As a result of the research, the following was established. First, the image of the star, associated with motifs of nostalgia, philosophical reflections on fate, and connection with Russian folklore, turns out to be symbolically multifaceted in the context of Bunin's poetics. Second, Bunin applied a conscious selection of material (Chapter 11) and creative transformation, condensing the meaning of the title, enhancing folklore through the image of the shepherd Jean, and adding autobiographical motifs. Third, Bunin's translations of the 1930s are not utilitarian work, but an artistic act of cultural dialogue, poetic reflection, and spiritual overcoming, changing traditional representations.
