Field research as a tool for determining the vitality of English-language borrowings of French youth argot

Abstract

The aim of the work is to assess the vitality of English-language borrowings as a source of formation of the argot vocabulary of modern French youth, with the goal of further description of the linguistic features of the studied reference group. The research is based on the empirical material obtained in the process of studying argotographic sources and analyzing literary works. The survey was conducted remotely. The respondents were residents of France aged 12 to 35. The survey did not reveal any territorial linguistic differentiation. The influence of gender on the use of English-language argotisms in the speech of modern French youth was not considered. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the verification of Anglicisms recorded in argot dictionaries and incorporated into literary texts, as well as English-language neologisms used in Internet communication and not registered in dictionary works. As a result of the field experiment, the frequency lexemes of the sociolect under consideration have been determined and neolexemes have been systematized. We have also succeeded in obtaining factual data, which has been added to a specialized corpus that serves as the basis for a comprehensive diagnosis of English-language borrowings in French youth speech.
