The phenomenon of a table talk in the paradigms of a Renaissance phrasebook

Abstract

The aim of the study is to identify ways of representing communicative practices reflected in Renaissance phrasebooks. The work is based on the material of the Spanish-French phrasebook of César Oudin (1608; 1622). The object of the study was an etiquette-ritualized polylogue, performed in the popular for the Renaissance era genre of table talk. The scientific novelty of the work consists, firstly, in referring to the material, unstudied from the standpoint of communicative linguistics, – the Spanish-French phrasebook of C. Oudin; secondly, in identifying the specifics of the etiquette-ritualized polylogue devoted to feasts; thirdly, in establishing the influence on the content aspect of this part of the phrasebook of the canon of table talk, formed in Renaissance culture on the basis of ancient literary tradition and rules of good form and norms of etiquette established in new realities. The results obtained show how communicative practices of table talk, which developed in Spain and France at the beginning of the 17th century, were reflected in this monument of educational literature.
