Temporal deixis in political discourse (based on speeches by British politicians on Brexit)

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify differences in the temporal structures of political speeches by two British politicians on a similar topic, as well as to examine how these differences influence the functioning of temporal markers within them. The scientific novelty of the work lies in describing and comparing the discursive characteristics of temporal markers in the final political speeches, which feature mono-centered and poly-centered temporal structures. It demonstrates that the characteristics of deictics depend on the type of deictic reference: whether they point to physical time or to the coordinate of the subjective temporal plane. It is also noted that the deictic reference determines the informational impact on the addressee of the political speech: conveying information within a system of coordinated points of physical time ensures the persuasiveness of the discourse, while information within the subsystem of the speaker’s subjective coordinate points is enriched with axiologically saturated contexts. The findings show that deictic markers in the context of final political speeches serve not only as effective means of direct reference but also significantly expand the subtextual informational space, enriching the communicative act with additional meanings, including pragmatically charged ones. Thus, through temporal deixis, two levels of political narrative are created – factual and metaphorical – whose combination shapes the effectiveness of political communication.
