The concepts of TERMINOLOGICAL SYSTEM, TERMINOLOGY and VOCABULARY in the context of research into English for Specific Purposes in architecture and aerospace discourse

Abstract

The research objective is to clarify and distinguish the concepts of ‘terminology’, ‘terminological system’, and ‘vocabulary’ within the framework of Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) to enhance conceptual precision in the description of professional discourse. The scientific novelty of this study lies in the comparative conceptual analysis of these terms within two distinct professional fields, architecture and aerospace, which has not been previously undertaken within this methodological and thematic scope. Drawing on theoretical models and field-specific linguistic data, this study identifies how terminological ambiguity arises and how these concepts are inconsistently used in academic and applied contexts. The results showed that ‘terminology’ is often equated with a general set of specialised words, whereas ‘vocabulary’ is interpreted more broadly, including metaphorical or instructional usage. Meanwhile, the term ‘terminological system’ is predominantly applied in highly standardised domains, such as aerospace discourse in English, where structured hierarchical terminology is necessary or has already been established. In contrast, the architectural domain discourse demonstrates a more diffuse and semiotically diverse use of specialised language. This paper highlights the need for clearer definitional boundaries between these key terms in LSP research and affirms the importance of conceptual rigor in linguistic and terminological studies.
