Significance of stylometry for linguistic brand attribution (based on English marketing texts of five global brands)

Abstract

The study aims to assess the role of statistical methods in the process of linguistic brand attribution using marketing texts as the research database. The novelty of the study lies in developing and testing a linguistic brand attribution algorithm combining methods of digital linguistics and conventional linguistic analysis. It is the first time that the stylistic parameters of English marketing texts have been measured using Burrows’ Delta stylometry method. As a result of text clustering two opposing trends were revealed – some brands tend towards standardization of their English marketing texts, whereas others choose variability of language means. The data obtained at the stage of linguistic analysis confirmed the assumption of consistency/variability as two approaches towards verbal signification of a marketing message. The study revealed that the two-stage process of linguistic brand attribution means a certain sequence of methods: digital tools prove effective at the stage of hypothesis generation, while linguistic analysis is needed at the next stage to verify the hypothesis regarding the presence/absence of a unified branding strategy among copywriters representing one brand.
