Pragmalinguistic characteristics of English-language psychological discourse

Abstract

The research aims at identifying the features of English-language psychological discourse in a pragmalinguistic perspective, which involves highlighting the relationships between language units and their use by subjects of psychological interaction, conditioned by the goals and expectations of the participants of the communication, the place and time of the communicative event, and the specifics of a definite situation. Despite the growing number of works devoted to psychological discourse, the focus of researchers is mainly on two types of psychological discourse – psychotherapeutic and popular psychological, which are studied in isolation from each other and without identifying their similarities and differences. The novelty of this research lies in the identification and description of the pragmalinguistic characteristics of psychological discourse taking into account its three varieties – psychotherapeutic, popular psychological and scientific psychological sub-discourses. The study revealed that the features of psychological discourse are determined by the spheres of its functioning and are manifested in its varieties. It was stated that the identified varieties of psychological discourse have both common and distinctive characteristics, which are determined by the target settings of specific situations of psychological interaction, status-role relations of communication participants, place and time of the communicative event, forms of communication, thematic content, choice of communicative strategies and linguistic means implementing them.
