Discursive strategies for representing the image of the Russian Empire in the English-language political narrative “Conflict in the Far East” (based on articles from “The Economist”, 1900-1905)

Abstract

The aim of the research is to identify the main discursive strategies and the linguistic means of their implementation in representing the image of the Russian Empire in the English-language political narrative “Conflict in the Far East”. The article examines the concepts of “political narrative”, “imagological image”, and “discursive strategies”, identifying and analyzing the linguistic manifestations of strategies such as individualization, dissociation, moral evaluation, and relational identification. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that, for the first time, the imagological image of the Russian Empire was examined using material from the British press of the early 20th century, identifying the main discursive strategies and the linguistic means of their actualization. As a result of the research, the main trends in the implementation of discursive strategies were identified: a shift from individualization, emphasizing the unique capabilities of the state, to dissociation, actualizing the opposition ‘Russian Empire and civilized countries’; the addition of moral evaluation and assimilation strategies to dissociation, through which the image is simplified and placed into the category of immoral subjects; and a significant role of relational nominations, aimed at discrediting the image.
