Features of lexicographical description of terms in the 18th century (based on the works of J. Ch. Adelung and J. H. Campe)

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the analysis of the development of lexicographical approaches to the documentation of linguistic terminology in 18th-century German lexicography. The aim of the study is to identify the characteristics of dictionary entries from the 18th century that describe terminological nominations. The paper discusses the typical features of the structure of these entries, the mechanisms for describing the meanings of terms, and their role in the development of language science during that period. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that, based on a comparative analysis of the works of J. Ch. Adelung and J. H. Campe, it is the first to reveal the main structural and semantic features of definitions of terminological units. Additionally, the article demonstrates how the ideas of the Enlightenment project, associated with pragmatism, scientific accuracy, and the desire to depict language as a system reflecting actual speech, were implemented in the work on these dictionaries. The results show that J. Ch. Adelung and J. H. Campe approached the process of documenting terminological units in dictionaries differently. An important aspect of the formation of linguistic terminology is the active use of synonymous nominations, which is evident in both Adelung’s dictionary and Campe’s work.
