Linguistic and discursive hybridity in the poetry of Giose Rimanelli

Abstract

The aim of this work is to identify the methods of hybridization of poetic ethnotext based on the work of the 20th-century Italian-American poet Giose Rimanelli. The scientific novelty of the research lies in defining the parameters of linguistic and discursive hybridity, as well as in the systematic description of the complex of hybridization mechanisms that shape the structure of a hybrid poetic text. The proposed theoretical model is applied for the first time to the work of Rimanelli. The results of the study showed that the hybridity of a poetic ethnotext can be measured according to the following parameters: intertextuality, interdiscursivity, polystylistics, rhythmic-phonetic hybridity, neologization, lexico-grammatical-syntactic contamination, code-switching or the macaronic style. These parameters are fully realized in the work of the Italian-American poet, but with varying degrees of intensity. The parameters of polystylistics, rhythmic-phonetic hybridity, interdiscursivity, and linguistic contamination prove to be frequent. Giose Rimanelli demonstrates a conscious poetics of linguistic hybridization, which performs a compensatory function and is based on the interference of Italian, dialects, English, and Latin, phonetic adaptation as a means of expressing cultural identity, the conceptual calquing of the immigrant experience, and the semantic contamination of various cultural codes. Moreover, dialect and Latin serve as cultural anchors, transmitting the ethnocultural determinant of “Italianità”.
