The use of substantival phrases with the genitive case in German chancellery language of the 14th-15th centuries (based on act texts from the Grand Ducal Hessian Main State Archive and Household Archive)

Abstract

The study is dedicated to the problem of contextual analysis of the textual realization of case systems in German chancellery language during the Late Middle Ages, examined from a comparative-historical perspective. The research objective is to clarify the specific features of the genitive case usage in a diachronic aspect. The scientific novelty lies in refining the contextual peculiarities of the functioning of substantival phrases with the genitive case in German official-business language at the turn of the Middle High German and Early New High German periods, based on a diachronic approach. The article examines substantival phrases with the genitive case in act texts from the 14th-15th centuries. Documents from the Grand Ducal Hessian Household and State Archives were analyzed during the study. The obtained research results demonstrate that by the end of the Middle High German period and the beginning of the Early New High German period, the most common types of the genitive case in chancellery German were possessive and explanatory. Simultaneously, the genitive case in such phrases fulfilled functions such as conveying hierarchical spatial-property relations or status-legal continuity. The analysis of texts revealed a low representation of archaic genitive case types. Nevertheless, the stability of substantival phrase structures and the typification of their usage were identified.
