Phonetic systems of French and Veps: zones of convergence, divergence, and potential interference

Abstract

The article presents a contrastive-typological analysis of the phonetic systems of French and Veps, conducted within the framework of studying language interference in the acquisition of French by speakers of Uralic languages. The aim of this study is to construct a two‑dimensional matrix model of zones of convergence (typological similarity) and divergence (structural discrepancy) in the phonetic systems of the two languages, which makes it possible to predict the risks of language interference in order to optimize linguodidactic strategies. This contrastive-typological study is based on the selection of key parameters in French (the target language) and Veps (the source language) according to their role in semantic differentiation and orthoepic norms, as well as on the observation of speech production by bilingual students at the Institute of the Peoples of the North, Herzen University. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that it is the first to perform a matrix mapping of the zones of convergence and divergence in the phonetic systems of French and Veps. This approach makes it possible not only to predict interference but also to identify resources for positive transfer. The proposed two-dimensional model of analysis (Language A – Language B) can be extended in the future to other languages of the Uralic, Altaic, and Paleo-Asiatic families. The results of the study indicate that the highest risk of interference is associated with zones of complete divergence, such as nasalization, palatalization, intervocalic consonant voicing, liaison, and diacritical marks. Zones of partial divergence include vowel length, diphthongs, and consonant assimilation. A zone of convergence (no risk of interference) was identified only in relation to the absence of final consonant devoicing before a pause. The obtained data provide a scientific basis for the subsequent development of linguodidactic techniques aimed at preventing interference and activating positive transfer by drawing on the identified typological parallels.
