Linguistic mechanisms for forming a negative image of Alliance 90 / The Greens in German political discourse

Abstract

The study aims to determine a typology of linguistic strategies used to form a negative image of Alliance 90 / The Greens in German political discourse, following the results of the parliamentary elections in Germany on February 23, 2025. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the first-time identification and description of the linguistic mechanisms for forming a negative image of Alliance 90 / The Greens that became prominent in the period following the collapse of the “traffic light coalition”. Unlike previous studies, this work reveals new discursive markers and tactics that were not recorded in analyses of the party’s criticism during earlier stages. The article analyzes the results of the February 23, 2025 elections (82.5% turnout, CDU/CSU victory, AfD strengthening, SPD rating decline), which indicate a crisis of confidence in the “traffic light coalition”. Based on a speech by Matthias Weiser (AfD) and an article by Tina Handel (Die Tagesschau), the study identifies key means of discredit: catastrophe metaphors, historical allusions, vocabulary of irrationality and infantilization, and mechanisms of implicit criticism. It is established that criticism of the Greens has taken the form of ontological delegitimization, reflecting deep value rifts in German society, particularly in the eastern states.
