The influence of linguistic structures on the construction of an individual’s mental reality (based on German‑language autobiographical discourse)

Abstract

The article investigates the cognitive mechanisms and linguistic structures of the German language involved in constructing the subjective mental reality of an individual in autobiographical discourse. The aim of the study is to obtain a comprehensive description of language-specific means of the German language (modal particles, subjunctive, preterite forms) that construct distance from the past, the degree of reliability of memories, and the emotional-evaluative tonality of the narrator’s inner world. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the following: for the first time, the cognitive-constructive functions of German modal particles, the subjunctive, and preterite forms have been established as active cognitive operators rather than mere narrative tools; for the first time, data on the language-specificity of the German model of constructing subjective reality have been obtained; new knowledge has been introduced into scholarly circulation regarding the mechanisms of distancing, epistemic assessment, and emotional experience realized by these linguistic means based on German-language autobiographical interviews. The conducted analysis has proven that the degree of reliability of memories, distance from the past, and emotional-evaluative tonality do not precede verbalization but are generated by the very selection and combination of the aforementioned linguistic structures.
