The language of ecological hypocrisy: greenwashing in Russian scholarly discourse

Abstract

The article investigates the process of linguistic adaptation and conceptualization of the English loanword “гринвошинг” (greenwashing) in contemporary Russian scholarly discourse. Special attention is paid to the mechanisms of forming the lexeme’s evaluative potential and its transformation into an interdisciplinary concept. The study aims to construct a linguistic model of the assimilation of the English loanword “гринвошинг”, determining its polyfunctional status and national-cultural specificity. The scientific novelty lies in demonstrating the cultural conditioning of the axiological potential of the globally-natured concept ГРИНВОШИНГ: it is established that while the Russian scholarly tradition is dominated by a moral-ethical evaluation of the phenomenon, the original English-language context is dominated by a pragmatic-utilitarian evaluation. The results demonstrate that the lexeme functions as a dynamic unit combining the features of a borrowing (a phonetic loan), a neologism, and an established term within the ESG agenda. The cognitive architecture of the concept has been reconstructed, revealing its conceptual core (semes of deliberate deception, cognitive gap, opportunistic behavior, and selective information disclosure) and its discursively conditioned periphery, which includes metaphorical and evaluative nominations.
