The rhetorical strategy of “Spielbrecher” in English-language mediatized political discourse (based on Donald Trump’s internet posts, 2025-2026)

Abstract

This study aims to prove that Donald Trump’s internet posts implement the rhetorical strategy of the “Spielbrecher”, which sets a precedent for changing the norms of political communication in mediatized discourse. Drawing on the theories of J. Huizinga and L. Wittgenstein, the author views political communication as a language game whose rules and boundaries are violated by the “Spielbrecher” in order to establish a new game with different rules. The author identifies lexical, stylistic, and syntactic markers of systematic violations of institutional political communication norms in Trump’s posts. These violations constitute a process that gradually blurs the boundaries of what is acceptable in political communication. The study’s scientific novelty lies in identifying, for the first time, the structural elements of the rhetorical strategy “Spielbrecher”. The study identifies three stable elements of the narrative scenario (polarization, ultimatum, avoidance of responsibility); three groups of lexical repetitions (positive evaluation, negative evaluation, threat markers); three categories of speech tactics (construction of alternative reality, annihilation of the opponent, coercion combined with avoidance of responsibility); and four binary oppositions that organize the semantic space of the posts.
