Metaphorization in the English professional lexis of fine furniture restoration: typology and diachronic dynamics

Abstract

The aim of the study is to establish the typological features of metaphorization and the nature of diachronic changes in specialized meanings in the English professional lexis of fine furniture restoration and conservation from the 18th to the 21st century. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time the English professional lexis of fine furniture restoration and conservation has been examined to identify the grounds for metaphorical transfer and source domains of metaphorization, determine the functional and stylistic status of metaphors, and reveal diachronic changes in their specialized meanings on the basis of professional sources from different historical periods. The results show that the sample is dominated by lexical units whose specialized meanings are based on visual resemblance and consists mainly of terms; a shared source domain does not necessarily imply identical grounds for metaphorical transfer. In the diachronic development of the lexis under study, both stability of meaning and semantic modifications were identified, the latter involving broadening and narrowing of semantic scope while retaining the original feature underlying metaphorical transfer.
