The idea of tradition in G. K. Chesterton’s “Tales of the Long Bow”

Abstract

This article examines the role of English cultural traditions in shaping the literary world of G. K. Chesterton’s “Tales of the Long Bow”. The purpose of the study is to prove that the main factor that influenced the artistic originality of the work is the idea of tradition. The scholarly novelty of the study lies in its detailed examination of G. K. Chesterton’s “Tales of the Long Bow” from the perspective of its reflection of English traditions and the English national character. The study found that various elements of artistic system of the work were significantly influenced by the idea of English cultural traditions: the plot of the work is built through the use of adynaton proverbs, which represent well-known truths formulated on the principle of the impossibility of the existence of phenomena or the performance of certain actions, which the characters refute by committing impossible acts. The characters’ actions are determined by their upholding of traditional English values, many of which define the national identity of the English people.
