Linguistic and semiotic mechanisms of cultural identity representation in contemporary English-language prose: space, corporeality, and language

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to identify the mechanisms of cultural identity representation through the interaction of semiotic resources of space, corporeality, and language in contemporary English-language prose of postcolonial and migratory borderlands. The article examines space, corporeality, and language as components of cultural identity representation in contemporary English-language prose that reflects the interaction of British and American sociocultural contexts with South Asian, African, and East Asian cultural experiences; these components act as means of categorizing and positioning participants in intercultural interaction. The scientific novelty of the research lies in proposing a three-component model of “space – body – language” as a unified complex of semiotic identity construction in contemporary English-language prose of cultural borderlands. The obtained results showed that the semiotic space of multicultural prose is a socially significant and culturally organized environment that sets the context for identifying participants in cross-cultural communication; corporeality acts as a manifesto of acceptance/rejection of mainstream culture; while language becomes an indicator of social positioning and a mechanism of social recognition and identity construction. Furthermore, cultural identity is formed and recognized in a literary text through the interaction of all three components of the identified model.
