Principles and regularities of compression and decompression mechanisms in simultaneous interpreting

Abstract

The study aims at describing the principles and regularities of the functioning of the cognitive-communicative mechanisms of compression and decompression in simultaneous interpreting as interconnected components of a single cognitive system of the interpreter. The article substantiates the theoretical significance of studying compression and decompression not as isolated interpreting techniques, but as tandem cognitive mechanisms that ensure the adaptation of the meaning of the source utterance to the conditions and the very situation of simultaneous interpreting. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that compression and decompression are considered in dialectical unity as mutually complementary mechanisms of a single cognitive system of simultaneous interpreting. As a result, two fundamental regularities of the tandem functioning of the mechanisms of compression and decompression in simultaneous interpreting presented as compensatoriness and complementarity are identified and described. Moreover, the study systematizes general principles of the functioning of cognitive mechanisms of simultaneous interpreting (systemicity, procedural automaticity, adaptability, cognitive irreversibility, emergence, functional specificity).
