ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT OF PERFECT TENSE IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN DIACHRONIC ASPECT

Abstract

The author considers the questions of the origin and development of perfect tenses in the English language since its grammaticalisation till now. The shift of meaning in the structure with verb “have” from attributive to verbal in the process of modern perfect tense grammaticalisation in the English language was due to the influence of meaning metaphorical transfer and the pragmatic aspects of use. The grammaticalisation of perfect tenses during the indicated period, as well as the development and change of this category in modern language can be considered as the examples of language development under the influence of extralinguistic factors.
