JOHN CHRYSOSTOM AS LITERARY HERO

Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of differences in describing the saints in the early and late versions of their hagiographies. In the article the historical-literary reasons of these differences are revealed by the material of John Chrysostom’s hagiography that is little-known in the Russian literary criticism. The research showed that the records of early hagiography saved the saint’s historical image but in later works the saint isn’t a historical character, he becomes a literary hero thanks to using legendary plots.
