ACCENT AND CONSONANT CONTEXT AS FACTORS DETERMINING THE QUALITATIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF UNACCENTED REDUCED VOWELS (BY THE MATERIAL OF THE AMERICAN VARIANT OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE)

Abstract

The article considers the ambiguous situation around the issue of the correlates of the English accent. The paper presents the results of the acoustic analysis of the unaccented qualitatively reduced vowels. The findings cast doubt on the universality of a neutral vowel in unstressed position and clearly indicate the necessity to consider the consonant context into which the realization of these vowels takes place and which determines the direction of qualitative reduction of vowels.
