SUBTITLED TRANSLATION AS A SYNTHESIS OF EXPLICATION AND ABRIDGING (BY THE EXAMPLE OF THE FRENCH VERSIONS OF H. MIYAZAKI’S FILMS)

Abstract

The article examines one of the paradoxical peculiarities of a subtitled translation from the Japanese language into the French - necessity to abridge the original text under the influence of technical requirements and at the same time to express explicitly the meaning of certain language units for the reason of considerable structural differences of a source language and target language. By the example of subtitles to H. Miyazaki’s films the author shows what kind of transformations allow most accurate translation of the content preserving communicative intentions of the speakers and emotional background of the statements.
