ON THE FEATURES OF THE PARTICLE JA IN THE GERMAN LANGUAGE

Abstract

The article examines the features of the German particle ja standing at the very beginning of a sentence. The paper shows in what types of sentences this particle can be used, what its functions are, discusses the category status of this particle. Relying on the analysis of the contextual surroundings the author concludes that the particle ja used at the beginning of a sentence should be considered as discursive as far as it combines the text fragments into the integrated whole in the semantic aspect and allows establishing the interaction between the speaker and the listener. The nature of relation established by this particle between the sentences or text fragments can be interpreted as conjunctive while the modal particle ja used in the medium field of the German sentence participates in the formation of implicative relations.
