THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF ONYM FORMATION IN THE ENGLISH NURSERY RHYMES AND FOLK TALES

Abstract

The article examines the basic principles of onym formation in the English Nursery Rhymes and folk tales. The analysis indicates that naming in the mentioned genre is motivated by the following factors: naming the fabulous personages in honour of the real historical figures; harmonious sounding name to ease the memorization of the text; description of the characters’ distinctive features.
