“FIRST WAVE” OF JAPANESE REALISM: NEW THEMES IN LITERATURE

Abstract

The article discusses the history of the formation of realism in new Japanese literature: from the acquaintance with theoretical bases of literary criticism to the creation of the first realistic works. The author specifies new themes for Japanese literature of this period: the conflict of a man and society, the position of a woman in the Japanese patriarchal family, the issue of adaptation of people of different social groups in the new Japanese society at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. By the example of specific works the paper shows the process of borrowing of new themes and form of their adaptation from Russian and European literature. Their role in the process of formation of new Japanese literature is determined as well.
