DOMESTICATION AND FOREIGNIZATION STRATEGIES WHEN TRANSLATING A LITERARY WORK (BY THE MATERIAL OF M. A. BULGAKOV’S NOVEL “THE MASTER AND MARGARITA” AND ITS FRENCH TRANSLATION)

Abstract

The article considers domestication and foreignization strategies by the material of the French translation of M. A. Bulgakov’s novel. The authors analyze and explain certain techniques and transformations in the target text from the viewpoint of the two basic translation strategies. When translating the phenomena and concepts of the Russian culture the translator basically uses the domestication strategy, so the target text becomes more understandable for the French readers, though the national-cultural colour is partially lost and semantic errors occur. The foreignization strategy is used occasionally to translate toponyms and characters’ names.
