IMPRESSIONISTIC LITERARY PORTRAIT IN “LE LIVRE DES MASQUES” (“THE BOOK OF MASKS”) BY REMY DE GOURMONT

Abstract

The article analyses the poetics of “Le Livre des Masques” (“The Book of Masks”) (1896) by Remy de Gourmont (1858-1915) - the French author, one of the founders of literary criticism. The paper identifies the peculiarities of an impressionistic literary portrait in Remy de Gourmont’s creative work, discovers the relation of Gourmont’s literary portrait with the genre tradition that was established by Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve. The changes in the genre structure are described in the context of the impressionistic criticism of the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. The emphasis is made on the emotional-evaluative tonality and associativity typical of Gourmont’s literary portrait.
