Issues of Using the Domestication Strategy in Realia Translation (by the Material of Chinghiz Aitmatov’s Works Translated into English)

Abstract

The aim of the research is to study the validity of using domestication as a predominant translation strategy in translating multilingual literary works, i.e. those works that contain a large number of realia representing various linguocultural communities. The paper is based on the texts of Chinghiz Aitmatov’s literary works in Russian and their corresponding translations into English. Scientific originality lies in considering translated realia in Chinghiz Aitmatov’s multilingual works from the perspective of hypertext. As a result, it has been proved that using domestication as a predominant translation strategy in translating the books in question leads to a noticeable decline in their stylistic authenticity, a weaker linguocultural impact on the reader and a partial distortion of the writer’s general concept.
