Abstract

The paper addresses the issue of translating everyday colloquial vocabulary in a poetic work into English. The main aim of the research is to determine the causes of insufficient or excessive equivalence in literary work translation. Scientific originality lies in the fact that the issue of equivalence in the rendering of everyday life realia in literary text translation remains little studied. The translations of A. S. Pushkin’s novel in verse “Eugene Onegin” served as the practical research material. The paper defines the terms “adequate translation” and “equivalent translation”, carries out a comparative analysis of the translations of the creative work by the famous Russian classic and considers the situations of complete and incomplete adequacy of colloquial vocabulary translation. Special attention was paid to the cases in which insufficient or excessive translation equivalence could be observed. As a result of the research, the authors have identified the causes of insufficient or excessive equivalence, as well as the linguostylistic ways of their rendering into English.
