Functional potential of expressive language means in the English-language scientific and technical text

Abstract

The aim of the study is to identify expressive means in English-language texts of the scientific style, which is traditionally characterized by conciseness, logic and strict consistency of presentation. The analysis showed that expressive language means are an integral part of scientific and technical texts and also have a specific feature of functioning. The study is novel in that it is the first to determine the functional potential of expressive vocabulary use in a scientific text. English-language scientific and technical articles about mining, oil and gas industry, engineering and economics were selected for the study. As a result of the study, the frequent functions of expressiveness were revealed, they are represented mainly by lexical means with the meaning of evaluativeness, modality, persuasion, as well as special terms containing metaphors. These expressive language means have the following functional potential: 1) making the described scientific statements more convincing; 2) visualizing the results obtained; 3) promoting the research and increasing its attractiveness in the eyes of potential sponsors.
