Mediation as a new competence in the training of translators (by the example of university students studying French)

Abstract

The aim of the study is to substantiate the importance of forming mediation skills as a new competence when training translators (using the example of university students studying French). The paper examines the concepts of linguistic mediation and mediation and draws a line between these terms. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time it presents exercises that can be used to develop mediation skills, i.e., the ability to mediate between two parties with different points of view or interests in order to find a compromise solution and satisfy all parties. Such skills are developed among students taking a course in a foreign (French) language in specialized universities. The result of the study amounts to presenting examples of exercises aimed at developing mediation competence, which is a set of knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for successful work as a mediator, including the ability to communicate effectively, manage conflicts and find compromise solutions. The task of the translator is to convey the meaning from one participant in a communicative situation to another in accordance with a previously received assignment. At the same time, the function of mediation is to establish contact between communicators and clarify the essence of the transmitted information, taking into account the ethnocultural, historical, and linguistic differences between communicators. A fairly high level of knowledge of the mediator plays an important role in the linguistic, cultural, historical, political and global spheres alike.
