Strategies, tactics, and techniques as reflections of the linguistic personality of a simultaneous interpreter (in the English-Russian language pair)

Abstract

The research aims to identify the strategies, tactics, and techniques employed in simultaneous interpretation, viewed through the lens of linguistic personology and the reflection of the linguistic personality of a simultaneous interpreter. Within a systemic framework, the study considers the interrelation of key concepts in translation studies: translation strategy, tactics, method, technique, translation transformation, and translation solution. Based on a theoretical review of Russian and foreign approaches to defining translation strategy, tactics, translation technique, and transformation, a functional model of translation strategy is proposed. The scientific novelty lies in the first-ever proposal of a functional model of strategies, tactics, and techniques of simultaneous interpretation, reflecting the typical linguistic personality of a simultaneous interpreter within a translation situation. A schematic representation of the network of tactics and techniques in simultaneous interpretation, viewed from the perspective of the linguo-functional approach, is also provided. As a result, the researchers conclude that the process of selecting translation strategy and tactics is influenced by the translation goal, determined by the interpreter themselves, as well as by linguistic and extralinguistic factors. Based on the findings, it has been determined that under the influence of changes in the communicative situation of translation, there is a shift in the translation strategy and the applied tactics, which are used in combination and complement each other.
