The so-called Czech diglossia in the linguistic space of a feature film

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation in the linguistic space of the modern Czech film “Lotrando a Zubejda” ("The Robber and the Princess") of two idioms, namely the Czech literary language (Czech. spisovná čeština, Standard Czech) and the actual Czech everyday-colloquial koine (Czech. obecná čeština, eng. Common Czech), which, in our opinion, allows us to speak about a particular manifestation of the so-called diglossia, that is, a variant of bilingualism when mismatched language systems are in a state of additional distribution. Using an alternative system is inappropriate or even impossible when using one of the two language systems. The ratio of the sounding of the lines of the characters in the named film and the narrator, on the one hand, and the titles accompanying these lines, on the other hand, can be considered as an opposition between imitation of oral discourse (the audience hear the lines of the characters and the narrator) and written discourse (the credits the viewer reads). The scientific novelty of the study is due to the fact that such an aspect of the correlation of these idioms has not been considered before either by supporters of the existence of the so-called Czech diglossia, or by their opponents. One of the results of this study is the illustration of different linguistic representations of the same situations of the pseudo-reality of a feature film through the prism of two different idioms of the same national language.
