Territorial variants of the Romanian language in the context of the concepts of linguistic situation and language policy

Abstract

This article examines the characteristics of territorial variants of the Romanian language, including "Moldovan" and "Romanian", in the context of their coexistence within a single Romanian-speaking area. Historical, political, and cultural factors that determine the specificity of the functioning of each variant and directly influence the formation of regional identity are analyzed. The authors pay particular attention to the mechanisms of language policy, revealing its role in the process of constructing national self-identification, and examine in detail the question of the extent to which the "Moldovan" language can be perceived as an independent linguistic unit or as a variant of Romanian. The aim of the research is to identify the specifics of the functioning and development of these territorial variants in modern socio-cultural conditions. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the systematization of factors shaping the linguistic situation and the clarification of the significance of language policy for the self-identification of language speakers in the Romanian-speaking area. The results obtained show that the choice of language name and the methods of its official codification depend not only on linguistic features but also on political priorities, which ultimately affects the perception of "Moldovan" and "Romanian" as separate languages or variants of a single language system.
