Dynamics of the distribution of author’s commentary in literary prose: based on novels from the 18th-20th centuries

Abstract

The aim of the research is to find patterns in the dynamics of the quantitative distribution of author’s commentary as a complex of intratextual and extratextual notes within a literary work. The article identifies two types of such complexes: adaptational author’s commentary, which decreases as the narrative progresses, and conceptual author’s commentary, which, on the contrary, increases. Using the material of three novels belonging to different stages of the literary process, it is demonstrated that, with the structural dependence of the author’s commentary on the composition of the work, the general patterns of its dynamics are constant and, on the whole, historically constant. The scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that previously scattered intuitions of researchers are, for the first time, formulated into a program of empirical research in this article. As a result of the research, an algorithm for working with the complex of author’s commentary in a literary narrative text has been developed. It is indicated that two dynamics, decreasing and increasing, are realized in the same complex, but they do not depend on the extratextual or intratextual form of the commentary, but are subject to the own patterns of the complex of notes integrated into the composition of the work.
