Buddhist motifs as ethnic markers in Buryat literature

Abstract

The aim of the study is to reveal the mechanisms of transformation of Buddhist motifs as ethnic markers in Buryat literature in the context of changing historical and ideological paradigms by analyzing the concept of destiny in the works of D. Batozhabay (“Stolen Happiness”) and B. Shiribazarov (“Compassion”). The article provides a comparative analysis of the significance of the motif of destiny through the lens of Buddhist philosophy (karma, compassion, rebirth). In Batozhabay’s novel, destiny is shown as a socio-historical fate, where Buddhism serves as an element of cultural memory. In Shiribazarov’s play, destiny is interpreted through Buddhist philosophy (karma, compassion) as a path of spiritual choice. The novelty of the study lies in identifying the transformation of the role of Buddhist motifs in Buryat literature: for the first time it was established that in the Soviet period Buddhism functioned as an element of cultural memory, fixing ethnic identity in conditions of ideological pressure, while in post-Soviet literature it becomes a philosophical tool for constructing personal and collective identity through the categories of karma and compassion. As a result of the study, it is revealed that Buddhist motifs remain a key marker of Buryat ethnicity, but their role is transformed depending on the historical context.
