Photography vs. original: boundaries of representativeness (based on W. D. Howells’s short story “The Magic of a Voiceˮ)

Abstract

The study aims to identify the boundaries of the representativeness of photography in the poetics of W. D. Howells’ short story “The Magic of a Voice”, which has not been translated into Russian. The scientific novelty of the study lies in establishing the correlation between the views of the writer, who stood at the origins of the formation of American realism, and the aesthetics of photography, reflecting various aspects of reality representation. In the course of the study, it was revealed that, on the one hand, W. D. Howells demonstrates the status of photography as a reliable image, on the other hand, photography can act as a means of falsification, replacing one reality with another. These representative possibilities formed the basis of the short story “The Magic of a Voice", created at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries and demonstrating the ambivalent character of photography. Photography can destroy our perception of reality, confirming the well-known principle that photography is never identical to life. The results showed that W. D. Howells, following the realistic principles of depicting reality, adhered to the perception of photography as a superficial representation, unable to reflect the essence and deep palette of the inner world of the photographed person.
